Audi TTRS Clubsport by MTM

Do you remember the Audi RS6 Clubsport package MTM revealed last year? It was 730hp of sheer awesomeness, and now MTM is bringing out that same package for the Audi TT-RS. The power output may not be as extensive as the RS6, but the exterior modifications will absolutely turn some heads.

The Audi TT-RS will be revealed when the Geneva Motor Show opens its doors this week, so MTM gave away very little in terms of TT-RS package details. The Clubsport package is their biggest upgrade for the TT-RS and it received a 472 HP engine update. This update was accomplished with a modification of the control unit, an MTM turbo charger, and a new MTM exhaust system. With this upgrade, the TTRS Clubsport will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 198 mph.

For the exterior the tuner is offering the same black-orange-white paint combination with racing elements and a new set of 20" Bimoto wheels.

More details will be revealed when the Audi TTRS Clubsport is revealed this week at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show!

Champions Red Bull the centre of attention

Valencia

On a cold January morning in Valencia it was hard for Red Bull to bask in their glories of last season's double championship success as they unveiled their 2011 challenger.

World champion Sebastian Vettel wisely wore a woolly hat and a blond beard as he and team-mate Mark Webber shiveringly unsheathed the RB7.

There was even an early attempt to burst Red Bull's bubble when a plucky journalist asked in the team's first media conference of the new season, "Have you thought that this car could be complete junk?"

Webber stared into the middle distance, designer Adrian Newey fashioned a face of indifference and it was left to Vettel to answer in shock, "No!"

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash Installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

By the end of the first day, Vettel had emphatically answered the question on the track by holding sway at the top of the timesheets.

The world champion was more than 0.7 seconds ahead of the next 2011 car, which happened to belong to the man he beat to the 2010 crown, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Times don't count for much on the first day of winter testing as the teams are furiously tinkering with the cars, running with unknown amounts of fuel on board and learning how to adapt to the Pirelli tyres, which will be used instead of Bridgestone this season.

But Vettel's marker was undeniably a statement of intent - Red Bull are out to defend both titles.

"It's a good sign," Vettel commented after his first day back in the cockpit. "Generally it's better to be on top of the ranking than being at the other end.

"What we achieved [in 2010] made us all very proud and no-one can take it away from us.

"But we have to develop on how good we were last year or the others will pass us. We have to stay focused, keep learning and keep trying to get better. If we just have the same approach as last year then we won't move forward."

Red Bull were cagey about the specific design changes and upgrades to the 2011 car.

Perhaps you cannot blame them when some of the other teams were hovering amid the media throng at the Red Bull launch trying to get a glimpse of Newey's latest creation. One rival team representative was even spotted unsubtly snapping away with a long-range zoom lens.

Red Bull simply say that the car is an evolution of its 2010 championship-winning vehicle and that a lot of the changes are "beneath the skin".

The principal tasks for all teams is in incorporating 2011's regulation changes which include the addition of a movable rear wing to aid overtaking, the return of 2009's Kers energy recovery and power boost system and the removal of the double diffuser, as well as gaining an understanding of the new Pirelli tyres.

Unlike last season, when they skipped the first test to spend more time honing the car at their Milton Keynes factory, Red Bull arrived at the opening test determined to take full advantage of the 15 days of testing before the first race of the season next month.

"We felt that the car was ready to be released," explained Newey. "It's always a balance of research time versus development time in terms of performance and reliability. I was keen to get the car out for the first test.

"It's difficult to design the car for the Pirelli tyres. Packaging for Kers is a challenge and no doubt McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes will have Kers and will be competitive and so for no other reason we need to get it to work for performance off the line.

"In terms of performance we are all struggling to recover the downforce we lost through the double diffuser.

"It is a period of nervousness for us but also a period of excitement."

While Newey grapples with the nuances of designing another peerless car, team boss Christian Horner is tasked with avoiding a repeat of the tensions within his team that threatened to derail last season's championships.

Friction between Vettel and Webber memorably spilled over onto the track at the Turkish Grand Prix when Vettel crashed out in an attempt to pass his team-mate for the lead.

"They'll push each other hard but I don't think they'll push each other too hard as they did in Istanbul," Horner commented.

"They have number one and number two on their cars but that is in many ways irrelevant. We give both drivers equal priority and that's the way we will treat them in 2011."

In their first appearance ahead of the new season, Red Bull presented a united front as a team hungry for more success. With the world champion leading the field, the fastest car on the track and the largest motorhome in the paddock, they already look every inch like being the team to beat when racing resumes next month in Bahrain.

Video: Commercial planes make for an awesome 'race'

We never see this sort of thing happening so you should excuse us for getting a good laugh out of this. Now, obviously, this wasn’t a real drag strip run-around race by two commercial planes - we shudder to think the ramifications of something like that actually happening - so we don’t expect the FAA to have their jaws drop on the floor with what could have been a laundry list of violations.

What it appears to be is a foreign commercial that pits two sets of pilots from competing airline carriers together to try to figure out which could run the length of the tarmac and around back to the hangar in the quickest possible time.

The ’race’, as some of you would call it, comes with tons of stunts that should never be done in a real-world setting. Unless of course some pilot has the cojones to perform donuts with a full-sized commercial plane, then we’re pretty content seeing a commercial show just how its done - even if there’s some post-production magic done it.

Laugh with us, folks! Check out the video and enjoy the ’race’!

Well, I am back in....

Been out of modelling for awhile because of time constraints and other more pressing issues. I finally have some time to get back to my stash. I have many unfinished projects in the wings, but decided to get something finished to get the ball rolling again.

Started with the "Rides" Ford GT I purchased to get the engine assembly for a different project. After some time finishing the body and smothing a few dimples it had, I came up with this.

Pretty much box stock, but I painted the stripes and the parts box supplied an engine. The good old 427 Cammer with dual quads and intake tubes from a 66 Galaxie kit.

I am pleased with the first finished kit I have gone in awhile. Kit may be a bit basic, but built up nice.

Video: The conclusion of BMW's "Wherever You Want To Go" documentary

Understanding the future of mobility might seem like a topic that?s too complicated to grasp for some people, but as the final part of BMW?s ?Wherever You Want to Go? documentary will tell you, it?s as simple as asking yourself a simple question: ?What do I want to see for the future of mobility??

This is what the final film of BMW?s documentary is all about. The future, as all the respondents in the video will tell you, is an inevitable thing that we, as humans, cannot stop. So instead of thinking of ways to try to circumvent what?s coming, it?s important to start embracing what it holds, even at the cost of sacrificing some of the technologies that we enjoy today.

Now, understanding and doing something about it is easier said than done. But when we open our minds to what the evolution of technology holds for all of us, then we can all be excited about all the possibilities it has in store for us.

If you missed the first three installments of the documentary, you can check out the episodes after the jump.

'Deuce Of Spades' '29 Ford A-V8 Highboy - Completed 02-25

The new hot rod movie Deuce of Spades is constructed around the story of an absolutely breathtaking black Deuce highboy which is the mythic star of the picture. But as stunning as it is, my eye was drawn to the car driven by the antagonist in the movie, "Fresno". It's a truly striking bright red '29 A-V8 on Deuce rails with a signature bare aluminum hood. When I saw it, I knew I had to build it.

Here it is as it appears in the film:

Unfortunately the car only appears for about 15 minutes in the middle of the picture and there are few detail shots of it. So I starting searching on the internet in the hopes pof finding shots of it before it starred in the moVie, hopefully with more mechanical and interior details. After a lot of work I found the Photobucket account for the car's builder which had quite a few shots. Here are some:

If I couldn't model the iconic bare metal hood with all its louvers there was no sense in pursuing this project. Fortunately I had a resin hood I got from Replicas and Miniatures Co. of Maryland that's designed to mate the AMT '29 Ford Roadster to a Revell Deuce Grill shell when sitting on a set of Revell Deuce frame rails. I also had some Archer Fine Transfer louver decals so I combined them to model the hood. Here's a picture showing the steps involved beginning with the layout tape to help align the rows and ending with the hood finished out in Testors Metalizer Buffable Aluminum Plate:

Also necessary was to adapt the Revell frame to the Model A body shell and to convert it to a buggy spring rear end as used on the 1:1. This involved shortening the rear ends of the rails, narrowing the floor panel and cutting a slot for the Model A arched cross member:

I'm using the AMT kit interior bucket but I've added the bolster across the top from the seat in the Revell '32 Ford Roadster kit as well as some styrene rolls along the sides. I'll also add some pleated side panels and seating surfaces as seen on the 1:1.

Incidentally the 1:1 is powered by a small block Chevy and as you can see the car is pretty basic. In the film they make a point to say that the car is very fast and its source of motivation a mystery. But the movie is set in 1955 and owned by a young kid so it would be highly unlikely to be Chevy V8 powered. So I'm installing a period correct full race flathead with 4 Strombergs and Evans heads. More on that in the next installment...

Here are some frame and body mockups:
